An ultrasonic corrosion gauge, also known as an ultrasonic thickness gauge or ultrasonic corrosion monitor, is a specialized non-destructive testing (NDT) instrument used to measure the remaining thickness of metal structures, such as pipes, tanks, vessels, and other equipment, and detect corrosion or erosion in their walls. This gauge utilizes ultrasonic waves to assess the thickness of the material and identify areas where corrosion has occurred.
The ultrasonic corrosion gauge works on the principle of ultrasonic pulse-echo technology. The gauge emits high-frequency sound waves (ultrasonic waves) into the metal structure being inspected. These waves travel through the material until they encounter the back wall or a change in material density, such as corrosion or erosion. When the ultrasonic waves encounter corrosion or a reduced thickness area, part of the wave is reflected back to the gauge"s receiver. The gauge measures the time it takes for the sound wave to travel to the back wall and back, and it calculates the thickness of the remaining metal. By comparing the measured thickness to the original thickness, the gauge can identify areas where corrosion or erosion has caused a reduction in the material thickness.
