Deaerators are critical components of many commercial and industrial boiler systems and require regular maintenance to ensure long and efficient equipment life.
Deaerator tanks serve three primary purposes,
1. They store and provide a constant supply of water to the boiler.
2. They raise the water temperature before it enters the boiler by mixing fresh make-up water with the steam. This helps prevent thermal shock and improves the overall efficiency of the boiler room.
3. They remove undissolved oxygen and other gases from the water before it enters the boiler.
This third point is crucial because oxygen and other gases can wreak havoc on the boiler's interior. Even levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide as low as 5 ppm (parts per million) can cause severe corrosion damage over time. Dissolved oxygen reacts with carbon steel throughout the feedwater piping, economizer, and boiler, causing oxygen pitting, which can ultimately lead to leaks. Deaerators help prevent this corrosion. Corrosion occurs when oxygen in the water reacts with the iron in the system.
A spray deaerator consists of a horizontal or vertical cylindrical vessel that serves as both the deaeration section and the boiler feed water storage tank. A typical spray deaerator is a horizontal vessel consisting of a preheating section and a deaeration section, separated by a baffle. Low-pressure steam enters the vessel through a distributor at the bottom of the vessel. Boiler feed water is sprayed into a zone and preheated by the rising steam generated by the spray nozzles. The feedwater nozzles and preheating section heat the boiler feed water to saturation temperature to facilitate the removal of dissolved gases in the subsequent deaeration section. The preheated feed water then flows into the deaeration section, where it is deaerated by steam rising from the distributor system. Gases separated from the water are discharged through a vent at the top of the vessel. The deaerated boiler feed water is pumped from the bottom of the vessel to the steam boiler system.
