A tray deaerator is a vertical, domed deaerator section mounted atop a horizontal cylindrical vessel that serves as a deaerated boiler feedwater storage tank. A typical tray deaerator consists of a vertical, domed deaerator section mounted above the horizontal boiler feedwater storage tank. Boiler feedwater enters the vertical deaerator section above the perforated trays and flows downward through the perforations. Low-pressure deaerated steam enters from beneath the perforated trays and flows upward through the perforations. Some designs utilize various types of packed beds instead of perforated trays to ensure good contact and mixing between the steam and boiler feed water. The steam removes dissolved gases from the boiler feed water and is discharged through a vent valve at the top of the dome. The deaerated water flows into a horizontal water storage vessel and is then pumped to the steam boiler system. Low-pressure heating steam enters the horizontal water storage vessel through a spray pipe at the bottom of the vessel to maintain the stored boiler feed water temperature. Tray-type deaerators have large capacity and are generally large in size and are often used in conjunction with large industrial water tube boilers.
