It employs coolant loops and cold plates or jackets, direct-refrigerant cooling or chillers, heat pumps and PTC heaters, multi-port electronic valves, electric coolant pumps and compressors, together with sensors and dedicated control software to orchestrate heating, cooling, pre-conditioning and waste-heat recovery. The goal is to keep each subsystem within its optimal temperature range under diverse climates and duty cycles, ensuring battery safety and lifetime while optimizing driving range, overall energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
The supply chain for thermal management in electric vehicles can be viewed in three tiers. Upstream are suppliers of coolants and refrigerants, aluminum and copper sheets/extrusions, plastic components and seals, as well as electronic components and sensors. Midstream consists of Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers providing electric coolant pumps, electronically controlled valves, electric A/C compressors, cold plates and battery cooling modules, heat-pump assemblies, integrated thermal management modules (ITM/ICM), along with hose and pipe assemblies. Downstream, vehicle manufacturers—and in some cases battery and e-drive integrators—define the overall thermal architecture and control strategy. In terms of profitability, upstream materials and standardized parts typically achieve gross margins in the roughly 10–20% range; functional components such as pumps, valves and heat exchangers often fall in the 15–25% band; while highly integrated, platform-level thermal management systems and modules (for example, combined battery TMS + heat pump + multi-loop integration) can command around 20–30% gross margin, as they require higher engineering and system integration know-how.
Thermal management for electric vehicles (EVs) has become a core systems discipline within the new energy automotive industry, underpinning real-world range, fast-charging performance, battery safety and all-climate comfort. As EV platforms move from demonstration fleets to mass-market products, OEMs can no longer treat “cooling” as a secondary engineering topic. Instead, they are investing in integrated thermal architectures that coordinate batteries, e-axles, inverters, onboard chargers and cabin HVAC as a single energy network. Driven by consumer demand for longer range, shorter charging times and reliable performance in both very hot and very cold environments, EV thermal management is evolving from a hidden subsystem into a visible differentiator in product positioning and brand perception.
From a technology development perspective, EV thermal management is shifting from simple, single-loop glycol cooling systems to multi-loop, highly integrated solutions. Early-generation EVs relied mainly on basic liquid cooling or even air cooling for battery packs, with cabin HVAC largely separated from powertrain cooling. Newer platforms increasingly adopt liquid-cooled battery packs with aluminum or multi-layer cold plates, direct liquid cooling for e-motors and power electronics, and compact chiller units that couple coolant and refrigerant loops. Heat pump systems using low-GWP refrigerants are becoming more common, enabling efficient cabin heating in winter while reducing the impact on range compared with traditional PTC heaters. Integrated valve blocks, variable-speed pumps and e-compressors, combined with thermal domain controllers and model-based control algorithms, allow OEMs to pre-condition batteries before fast charging, reuse waste heat from inverters and motors, and dynamically choose the most efficient operating mode under different driving and charging scenarios
Regionally, EV thermal management technology development and application show a clear multi-polar pattern. Asia-Pacific, led by China, Korea and Japan, has become a major hub for EV thermal solutions, supported by high-volume EV production, dense supply chains in batteries and power electronics, and strong domestic demand across passenger cars, buses and logistics vehicles.
