High Temperature Ammonia Cracking Catalysts Market

Thermal catalytic cracking is currently the most mature and widely used ammonia cracking technology. It utilises a metal catalyst to break down ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen at high temperatures. Although it is already in commercial application, e.g. in Europe and Japan.
Nickel-based catalysts: Nickel-based catalysts react at high temperatures in the range of 600-900°C. They have the advantages of low cost, high catalytic activity and good stability, and are commonly used in industry. However, due to the high operating temperature, research is underway to develop nickel-based catalysts that work efficiently even at lower temperatures.
Ruthenium-based catalysts: Ruthenium-based catalysts allow efficient cracking at lower temperatures (around 400-500°C) and therefore have lower energy consumption. This catalyst is suitable for high hydrogen purity requirements such as fuel cell applications. However, the high cost of ruthenium limits its economic viability on a large scale.
Iron-based catalysts: Iron-based catalysts offer the advantages of low cost and abundance of resources, and exhibit moderate activity at lower temperatures, making them an economically promising option. The development of new iron-based alloy catalysts aims to further improve cracking efficiency and stability.
