SPAD (single photon avalanche diode) is used in single-photon detection applications, where it is often involved in photon counting.
Semiconductor Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) can detect weak signals and have important applications in quantum communication, lidar and atmospheric detection. Time-resolved confocal microscopy is a powerful tool that has been well established for research in the life sciences. It can realize the quantitative measurement of molecular dynamics, the detection of cellular environment, and the study of protein interaction. While having excellent spatial resolution, confocal microscopy greatly reduces phototoxicity through precise control of excitation light energy. However, confocal microscopy must strike a balance between signal strength and resolution: smaller pinholes lead to higher confocality, which means higher resolution and better area selectivity, but the signal strength also decreases. When applied to image scanning microscopes (ISMs), SPAD arrays remove this trade-off, allowing for increased signal strength while increasing spatial resolution. Thanks to the great development of CMOS SPAD technology, more advanced SPAD arrays and imaging detectors began to appear, which not only revolutionized confocal microscopy, but also greatly helped other fields that need to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of photon counting detectors. SPAD arrays present an excellent opportunity for the development of confocal microscopy systems, as SPAD arrays have the potential to improve all key parameters including SNR, acquisition speed, excitation intensity threshold, and spatial and temporal resolution, while adding little to the complexity of the system. At the same time, the SPAD array also provides opportunities to expand the application of FLIM technology in the fields of medical research and development, medical diagnosis, and surgical assistance. On the other hand, like electron multiplier CCD, SPAD imaging detection has the potential to further expand the functionality of high-end imaging detection systems.
