Mask ROM is a type of read-only memory (ROM) whose data is written directly to the chip through a physical mask during the semiconductor manufacturing process, rather than being loaded programmatically. The data in mask ROM is permanent and cannot be modified or erased after manufacturing, so it already contains specific programs or data when it leaves the factory. This type of memory is often used in mass-produced devices, such as early game consoles, computer firmware, embedded systems, etc., and is an ideal choice due to its low cost and high stability. Mask ROM uses photolithography during the manufacturing process to define the state of each storage cell in the memory chip (i.e., 0 or 1) by using a specific mask, so once the mask design is completed and put into production, the data is permanently fixed. The advantages of this type of memory are low cost and fast reading speed, which is suitable for application scenarios that have high requirements for data immutability. However, its main disadvantage is poor flexibility and the inability to update or correct data later, so it is not suitable for occasions where data needs to be updated frequently. In addition, the manufacturing cycle of mask ROM is long, especially when the storage content needs to be changed, the chip needs to be redesigned and manufactured, which also limits its application in some modern electronic devices. With the widespread use of programmable memories such as flash and EEPROM, the use of mask ROM in modern devices has gradually decreased, but in some products that require large scale, low cost and high stability, mask ROM is still a reliable storage solution.
As an early read-only memory technology, mask ROM has been gradually replaced by more flexible programmable memories (such as EEPROM and flash memory) in the modern memory field, but it still has its unique value in specific application scenarios. Its biggest advantage is low cost and high efficiency. Especially in mass production, mask ROM directly implants data during the manufacturing process through a physical mask, avoiding the complexity of later programming. Therefore, for those occasions where data is fixed and does not need to be modified, such as embedded systems, firmware in consumer electronics products, and early electronic game cartridges, mask ROM is still a very competitive solution. In addition, mask ROM has a fast reading speed and can provide extremely high stability and data security, because data cannot be modified or deleted in any form, which is crucial for some data storage that needs to be preserved for a long time and is highly reliable. However, the disadvantages of mask ROM are also obvious, especially the unchangeable nature of data after solidification makes it lack flexibility and unable to adapt to the ever-changing needs of modern technology products. When the demand for data update or correction is high, redesigning the mask and manufacturing the chip is not only time-consuming but also costly. Therefore, mask ROM is now mainly used in scenarios that have strict requirements on cost, stability and security and do not require frequent updates.
