A TRIAC (triode for alternating current) is a type of thyristor that is used for controlling AC power. It is a three-terminal device that can switch AC power on and off, and it can also control the amount of power that is delivered to a load.
TRIACs can conduct current in both directions, making them useful for AC power control applications, such as in dimmer switches, motor speed controllers, and other applications where variable AC power control is required.
The device is composed of two thyristors that are connected in parallel, with their gates connected together. When a signal is applied to the gate, the device switches on and allows current to flow through the device. The device will remain on until the current through it drops to zero, at which point it will switch off.
