Kovar alloy (4J29) is a Fe-Ni-Co based constant expansion alloy, typically composed of 54% Fe, 29% Ni, and 17% Co. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is approximately 4.5 × 10⁻⁶/℃ in the range of 20–450 °C. It expands and contracts almost synchronously with borosilicate glass and Al₂O₃ ceramics, thus enabling highly airtight "glass-metal" or "ceramic-metal" seals.
Kovar alloy (4J29) uses Fe-Ni-Co alloy as its raw material, with a typical composition of 28.5–29.5% Ni, 16.8–17.8% Co, and the balance Fe, while limiting impurities such as C, Mn, and Si. Nickel and cobalt are high-priced strategic metals, accounting for approximately 46% of the alloy's weight. Their price fluctuations directly determine material costs, typically accounting for 40%–60% of the total cost of bars, plates, and strips. Subsequent processing requires vacuum induction melting (VIM) and electroslag remelting (ESR) to ensure purity, followed by homogenization annealing, multi-pass cold rolling, and slitting. The entire process—processing, heat treatment, and surface finishing—accounts for approximately 35% of the cost. In Q4 2025, the market reference price for cold-rolled strip was 450–800 RMB/kg, with thinner strips being more expensive, and its price fluctuating monthly with LME nickel and cobalt prices.
