In 2024, global sales of Super-Invar alloys reached 1,965 tons, with an average selling price of US$42,855 per ton.
Super-Invar alloys are low-expansion alloys developed from traditional Invar (Fe-36Ni) by replacing some nickel with cobalt. A typical composition is Fe-32Ni-5Co (called Super-Invar 32-5). Its average linear expansion coefficient near room temperature can be as low as 0.5–0.8 × 10⁻⁶/℃, lower than Invar, while still maintaining high strength and good low-temperature structural stability.
Super Invar alloy (4J32/Alloy 32) is made from iron-based raw materials, containing 31.5-33% nickel, 3.2-4.2% cobalt, 0.4-0.8% copper, and trace amounts of C, Mn, and Si. Nickel and cobalt together account for approximately 35% of the alloy's weight. Their high prices, fluctuating with LME prices, directly determine that raw material costs account for over 55% of the total cost. Adding to this the need for vacuum induction melting (VIM) + electroslag remelting (ESR) to ensure purity, homogenization annealing, and multiple cold rolling, slitting, and oxide layer finishing processes, processing and testing costs account for approximately 35%. Ultimately, the market price of cold-rolled strip is approximately 240-350 RMB/kg, linked to monthly nickel and cobalt prices.
