Transcritical CO₂ Refrigeration Unit is a refrigeration technology that uses carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a refrigerant. Unlike traditional refrigeration systems, this system works in a supercritical state, that is, the temperature and pressure of CO₂ are higher than its critical point (critical temperature is 31.1°C, critical pressure is 7.38 MPa). In a supercritical CO₂ refrigeration system, carbon dioxide exceeds the critical point during the compression process and no longer forms a distinct gas-liquid two-phase like conventional refrigerants, but exists in a "supercritical fluid" state. This supercritical state of carbon dioxide has a high heat exchange capacity and can effectively exchange heat at high temperature and pressure, thereby improving the efficiency of the system.
In recent years, the supercritical CO₂ refrigeration system (Transcritical CO₂ Refrigeration Unit) has gradually emerged in the global refrigeration industry and has become an important representative of energy-saving and environmentally friendly refrigeration technology. With the increasing global attention to climate change, energy efficiency and environmental protection, carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a natural refrigerant is non-toxic and harmless, has no ozone depletion potential, and has a greenhouse effect far lower than traditional Freon refrigerants. The characteristics make supercritical CO₂ refrigeration technology a choice that many countries and regions have advocated. Especially in the field of commercial refrigeration, supercritical CO₂ systems have been widely used and gradually occupied market share due to their high efficiency and environmental protection advantages.
At present, the market application of supercritical CO₂ refrigeration systems is mainly concentrated in cold chain logistics, retail refrigeration, supermarkets and commercial air conditioning. In these fields, especially in environments with high demand for low-temperature refrigeration, CO₂ systems show superior thermal efficiency. For example, the application of supercritical CO₂ refrigeration systems in supermarket cold chain systems is very common in Europe and Japan, and many large supermarkets have used supercritical CO₂ refrigeration systems to replace traditional Freon refrigerants to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Compared with traditional Freon systems, supercritical CO₂ systems can maintain higher refrigeration efficiency at higher ambient temperatures. This has led to its gradual attention and application in high-temperature regions (such as the Middle East and South Asia). Especially in high-temperature climates, supercritical CO₂ systems can operate more efficiently than traditional systems, so they have great advantages for some applications that require low-temperature environments.
Although the current market size is not as large as traditional refrigerants, as technology matures and costs gradually decrease, the market penetration of supercritical CO₂ systems is expected to increase rapidly.
