Removing these dissolved gases improves boiler efficiency and lifespan. There are two types of deaerators: thermal deaerators and vacuum deaerators. Thermal deaerators are further categorized as spray and tray types. A spray deaerator is a cylindrical vessel used to remove dissolved gases from the feedwater. Dissolved gases are removed by either reducing the pressure or increasing the temperature within the deaerator. Feedwater entering the deaerator passes through an aeration section, where it is subjected to high steam, which removes dissolved gases. A tray deaerator is a vertical dome located on a horizontal section of the vessel. The fundamental difference between tray and spray boilers is that tray boilers use both nozzles and trays. The combined use of spray and trays allows for better mixing of air and water (enhanced heat exchange). This allows for more precise removal of dissolved gases from the feedwater. A vacuum deaerator operates on the same principle as a tray deaerator, but uses a vacuum pump at the exhaust port. This minimizes exhaust losses. By minimizing exhaust losses, boiler efficiency can be improved.
