Wireless EV Charging Market Size

The global wireless electric vehicle charging market size was valued at USD 7.6 Million in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 210.1 Million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 36.4% from 2020 to 2030. The OEMs segment and governments are emphasizing on electric vehicles usage as an effort to reduce tail pipe emissions. With the increase in demand for electric vehicles, the requirement for charging stations is expected to significantly increase in the near future. As the plug-in charging stations take longer hours for charging, the on-the-go wireless electric vehicle chargers can cater to the need and provide range extension. The wireless charging has high applications for cars as well as for commercial fleets; thus, fostering the wireless electric vehicle charging market.

The major companies profiled in the wireless EV charging market share include Bombardier, Continental AG, Evatran Group Inc. (plug less power), Fulton Innovation, Integrated Device Technology, Inc., Powermat Technologies Ltd, Qualcomm Inc., Robert Bosch GmbH, Texas Instruments Inc., Toyota Motor Corporation, and Witricity Corporation.

The market segmentation is based on power source, charging methods, installation, distribution channel, vehicle type, and region. The power source segment is further divided as 3–<11 kW, 11–50 kW, and >50 kW based on the power output requirement for wireless charging. Based on charging methods, the market is segmented into capacitive wireless power transfer (CWPT), magnetic gear wireless power transfer (MGWPT), resonant inductive power transfer (RIPT), and inductive power transfer (IPT). Home and commercial installation types are covered on the basis of installation. Depending on the distribution channel, the market is bifurcated into OEMs and aftermarket. The vehicle type segment is further divided into battery electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and commercial electric vehicles.

Region wise, the market is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.

Covid-19 Impact Analysis

With the advent in COVID-19 pandemic across the globe, the global wireless EV charging market has been affected as the manufacturing units have been shut down due to the imposed lockdown in major countries across the globe. Also, the unavailability of skilled labor has affected the market. However, the global wireless EV charger market is expected to register a significant growth in the near future owing to its rising technology adoptions in the developed countries.

Top Impacting Factors

The significant factors impacting the growth of the wireless EV charging market include increase in sales of electric vehicles (EVs), rise in demand for energy-efficient sources as an alternative to fuel, and expensive integration of technology and slower charging. Further, excessive research in far-field wireless charging technologies, and technological advancements and adoption of smart marketing strategy have a strong impact on the market. Each of these factors is anticipated to have a definite impact on the electric vehicle chargers market during the forecast period (2020-2030).

Increase in Sales of EV

EVs offer multiple advantages such as reduced fuel (petrol, diesel, and gas) consumption and decreased emissions from tailpipes, which significantly boost their demand across the globe. This in turn is expected to escalate the need for wireless charging for electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles during the forecast period.

In addition, key players operating in the wireless electric vehicle charging market are adopting various strategic moves such as product development and collaboration, to tap the business potential. For instance, Nichicon Corporation and Qualcomm entered into a strategic agreement. Based on the agreement, Nichicon Corporation is expected to include Qualcomm Halo wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC) technology in its product portfolio and focus on commercializing Qualcomm Halo wireless electric vehicle charging WEVC technology for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Furthermore, several EV manufacturers are deploying wireless charging systems in their products. For instance, in Germany, on May 28, 2018, BMW launched its wireless electric car charging system. This system allows vehicles to park over the inductive charging station followed by a simple push of the start/stop button to initiate charging. Once the battery is completely charged, the system switches off automatically. Qualcomm, Renault, and French mobility together developed a wireless charging system called GroundPad. This system can be installed in a garage or outside to connect to the vehicle’s charging system over eight centimeters through a magnetic field.

In addition, the demonstration is carried out on an electric vehicle with the use of wirelessly charged inductive device in Satory Versailles, France. GroundPad is equipped with a high-power electric vehicle charging system, which enables electric cars to charge their batteries while on the move. These latest trends are expected to drive the growth of the wireless electric vehicle charging market in the near future.

Slower charging rate and costlier integration of technology as compared to traditional cable chargers act as the key restraints of the wireless electric vehicle charging market. In addition, wireless charging devices have a distance limitation. RF energy technology fails when energy is to be transferred over a long distance. In electric vehicles, the charging time required is more and it varies in accordance with the vehicle battery capacity. Devices take longer to charge when the power supplied is of the same amount. Furthermore, the technology is more expensive, as inductive charging requires drive electronics and coils in both device and charger, thus, it increases the complexity and cost of manufacturing. However, newer approaches and advancements in the technology are anticipated to reduce transfer losses and improve speed.
